Why You Need SEO to Grow Sales

“I have a great business, but no one seems to know about it! What am I doing wrong?” Sound familiar? Every great entrepreneur has had these exact same thoughts. No business automatically starts with success, you have to work to get there. The first way to be successful in your business is to figure out your target audience; then to grow your customer base. “How do I make it grow?” I’m glad you asked! Time to learn about SEO.

SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” Search engine optimization is a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) -- including Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines. The more site visitors, the better the chance to turn visitors into leads.

“That’s great. Now how do I use it?” SEO is an ongoing strategy, and can often take several months before you see the results you’re looking for. After establishing your customer base, you have to know what keywords your site is coming up for. A great tool for beginners is the “Google Keyword Planner.” You use this tool to see what keywords your competitors rank for, and insert those words into your own site (insert in the Title Tag and Body Copy).

Content is another important thing to have. Who wants to visit a site that has nothing to offer? This is especially true for relevant content. Would you want to visit a page that hasn’t been updated since 2010? I know I wouldn’t. Having consistent, relevant content is a step in the right direction in terms of SEO. You can do this by blogging, having a podcast, or starting a Youtube channel. If you have images on your site, be sure to include meta tags, which basically describes what the picture is about, as search engines only understand words, not images.

Link building is about exchanging links with other websites to increase your own site's backlinks and quality backlinks. This is a great way to increase brand awareness. When another site links back to you, it shows their existing customer base that you are authentic and worth looking into. There are a variety of ways to approach this, including: Debunking a myth, guest blogging, providing testimonials about a site, linking to competitors/pages that rank well, getting interviewed, content marketing, writing a “how to guide”, social bookmarking, and asking customers to link to you. “When is it okay to link to other websites as you’re writing? I say whenever those links deliver the greatest possible benefit for your business and your customers” (Beard).

The benefits of SEO for your business are endless. According to Moz, an SEO consulting company, “The future is uncertain, but in the world of search, change is a constant. For this reason, search marketing will continue to be a priority for those who wish to remain competitive on the web. Some have claimed that SEO is dead, or that SEO amounts to spam. As we see it, there's no need for a defense other than simple logic: websites compete for attention and placement in the search engines, and those with the knowledge and experience to improve their website's ranking will receive the benefits of increased traffic and visibility”(Fishkin).
